LANGUAGE SIMPLIFIED
AT A RECENT meeting of members of the Chartered Institute of Journalists there were complaints about how babbling language and ever-increasing use of technical words and phrases were making comprehension far more difficult. A speaker harked back to the days of ‘Basic English’, devised in the mid-war years by Cambridge graduate Charles Kay Ogden and adopted by BBC newsreaders for decades. Read more

SURVIVING AND THRIVING
IT IS NOT true that the faithful old press release is dead. It has been under attack from multimedia infections, yes, but it’s back at work, fit for purpose. Social media has not made traditional channels irrelevant. The process of distributing news releases has not been replaced by tweets. Companies will not be abandoning announcements as part of their marketing store. Humble press releases, albeit in modified formats, are not only surviving, they are thriving. Read more

COMMUNICATING CLEARLY has never been of greater importance, if people are to be rescued from the digital age’s ocean of words and helped to dry out with relevant data. Information, though, only has value when it can be absorbed into the knowledge stream. To take effect, it has to be delivered consistently, in a readily identifiable manner and using a tone that’s easily understood: slowly but surely. Gabbling shouters rarely make the most telling contributions. Read more

ANOTHER ONE SOLD and you’re meeting targets. It’s quite another challenge, however, to maximise income from the deal. Fundamental to profitability is upselling: persuading customers to buy a higher-priced product or service or to add something extra. Upselling is not just about more money in your account. Nor is it about hard bargaining. Rather, it can point customers towards increased satisfaction, to solve problems, or to obtain what is best for their purposes. Read more

IN DEFENCE OF THE PRESS
THE UK HAS SLIPPED to 40th place in the global rankings for press freedom and is one of the worst in Europe, according to the latest World Press Freedom Index. The country is 18 places lower than when the list was first published in 2002. Hard line policies of successive governments and a general climate of hostility towards the editorial media have compounded the chipping away at previously revered rights of expression and unfettered discussion.
